Couponing In China, And My Random Thoughts

Here's an interesting article about how couponing is catching on it China. (Thanks Tayler) That's the last place I would have thought couponing and bargain hunting would be big. It just shows that it's a popular mindset that appeals to people of all ages even across cultural lines. But this line really rubbed me the wrong way:

"This isn't your grandma or a housewife cutting out Sunday coupons in her kitchen, because they are the future," said Leeon Zhu, a senior planner at the advertising firm Young and Rubicam's Shanghai office. "And they're at the forefront of retail consumption growth in this country."

I don't know about you, but I'm getting a little tired of hearing couponing referred to as 'your grandmother's hobby'. There are websites now that brag that they aren't your grandmother's coupon sites. Shopping with coupons, bargain hunting and saving money has absolutely nothing to do with age. The latest generation is as big on it as the last generation, and that cycle will continue. It's like some people want to make it more appealing by distancing themselves from their old fogey parents/grandparents. Well, listen up. We (us old grandmothers) invented power shopping with coupons. Give a little respect where respect is due. Couponing appeals to people with a certain mindset. There are plenty of grandmothers, mothers, and daughters who wouldn't shop without them. There are plenty of grandmothers, mothers, and daughters who wouldn't touch a coupon with a ten foot pole. So let's stop insulting an entire generation with negative comments. All of us, with the coupon mindset, are in this Coupon Craziness together -- regardless of age!
