It's MegaFriday on Swagbucks. I've now been a member for almost a year. Swagbucks pays! I accumulate Amazon gift cards, then wait for something I really want. I cashed in the end of August, a dream treat for moi .... a Kindle with the cover that has the little light. I'm very proud that I was able to do this. It takes awhile to get a nice sum at Amazon, but what a thrill when you get something for free with gift cards. If you do searches on-line, you should make it pay by doing them through Swagbucks. First you join, then you can either log into Swagbucks and search from there, or the easier way is to download their tool bar so the search field is always on your screen. Then refer your friends and family.

Groupon: Convert Old Movies & Photos to DVD

Here's an interesting deal that will fit some people's needs. Do you have old family photos that are fading, old movies on 8mm film reels, or old VHS cassette tapes of family memories? Do you wish you could get them in permanent DVD digital format? There is a service called ScanDigital. You mail your materials to them, and they turn them into DVDs.

Today only Groupon has a deal to get $100 worth of service
from ScanDigital for $40. That's enough to do 200 photos, 170 negatives, 145 slides, six 8mm reels or five videocassettes. They do color correction on old photos. I have a bunch of old movies on 8mm reels, and some early video cassettes when Jordan was a baby*. I'm doing this deal and getting them converted to DVDs. Here's how to get the Groupon deal.

1) Go to Groupon
2) Register, or if you are already a member, click on "Visit Other Cities" at the very top of the page.
3) Click on San Antonio. You don't have to live in San Antonio since this is an on-line deal.
4) Buy into the deal.

ScanDigital will generate a mailing label for your materials. After about a week, you get back the original copies along with the new DVDs. This deal is limit 3 per person. I just walked around the house and gathered up eleven 8 mm's and old videocassettes, all family movies, and so I'm doing the deal twice.

* Does any remember those big clunky video recorders we got for free from the Camel/Salem deal in the 1990's? If you have VHS tapes, this is the right deal to convert them to DVDs.

My Entertainment Book Saved Me $150+

Here's my Entertainment Book success story. In one month, we go to San Diego for son Jordan's Marine Boot Camp graduation. There will be four of us going, including his fiancee. I've been doing a lot of research to find the best hotel deal. It had to be one with an airport shuttle, and a free shuttle to MCRD where the graduation takes place. Most of the mid-level hotels with 2 1/2 stars, like Holiday Inn, Hampton Inn, La Quinta run about $109 - $119 a night. The best I could find was La Quinta Inn for $89 with the
Entertainment book card. Then I decided to go straight to the Entertainment website and start there. I logged in after I registered my book. Bingo. The first San Diego hotel listed was 3 1/2 stars at half price, $65 a night, reg $130. It's right near the beach, has both shuttles, and looks much nicer than the 2 1/2 star hotels. So I jumped on it and booked two rooms for two nights. I think I saved at least $150 dollars and got a nicer place to stay. That single purchase made the book better than free. Now I have all the other coupons to use for the coming year. You can order the book for your city or state, then if you need deals for other parts of the country, you can log into their website and browse for restaurants, hotels, etc. in other zips and cities. I'm a believer.

Troubles with RiteAid $128 Coupon Booklet

As I knew would happen, people asking for the $128 Coupon booklet at RiteAid are told, no, they have to get a flu shot to get it. That's wrong. Before you go,print this page and highlight two different lines. First highlight:
you'll get up to $100 in Rite Aid savings3 

 

then highlight the footnote at the bottom ---
3 No purchase necessary. While supplies last.
No purchase necessary means you don't have to buy the flu shot. While supplies last means they may run out of booklets. The sad thing is that most of these booklets will go to waste hidden under the counter or in a box in the back room. Some employees will tell you they never got any. Not true, all the stores got them, but if they are in an unopened box pushed back in a storeroom corner, that treasure will go to waste.

Which brings up a ramble that you can feel free to skip. After you've been a serious couponer for awhile, you'll discover a wide range of competency among store employees. Some employees are there only for the paycheck. They don't read the weekly sales flier, they don't care about the promotions, they don't care if there is a coupon booklet or not. They will brush you off with a lazy answer you know is not true. Oh, we didn't get any of those  or This store isn't participating or You won't get the Register Reward if you used a coupon. This person makes up funky rules on the spot -- any answer to make you go away. On the other end of the spectrum is the smart employee who takes customer service seriously. This person will actually go into the back room to see if they can find what you need, and will actually come up with the product or coupon booklet or sales flier or monthly rebate booklet. This person is knowledgeable about the weekly sales and knows where to find the items on the shelf. This person seems happy for your deals and compliments you. This person knows the store rules and doesn't make up new ones to get rid of you. In the middle of this spectrum is the average employee who is some help but not really into pleasing the customer. Asking for a manager is no guarantee of good service. Some are great, some are horrible, just like the clerks. It's such a joy when you happen upon a good employee who knows her/his stuff. When I
find a great employee, I often take a moment to memorize the person's name, then I email a glowing report to corporate via their website, giving lots of details about how helpful and knowledgeable the person was.
It's my way of rewarding and reinforcing excellent service.

For those who run ads in the print RefundCents, there is a person, A. Johns, Box 777, Wash BRG, New York, NY 10033, who may answer your ad in a bizarre way. This person has not been a subscriber since 2002, but is getting a hold of issues. He/she will send you junky materials you didn't request and demand things in return. I have written to A. Johns and requested that he/she stop responding to ads in RefundCents, but ultimately I can't control it. If this person sends you something that doesn't match your ad, you have no obligation to send him/her anything, nor do you have to return his/her materials. I hope everyone stops responding to A. Johns, so maybe he/she will get the hint. I've gotten 3 complaints this month that A. Johns is back. As I said, the person hasn't been a subscriber for 8 years, but I suspect he/she has subscribed under a different name.
