Off Topic: Almonds have become a controversial crop in California because of the drought. It takes a gallon of water to produce one almond. The almond growers are taking a lot of flack.
But that's nothing compared to beef -- It takes 106 gallons of water to produce one ounce of beef.
There's a fascinating chart here showing how much water it takes to produce any given meal. This is on my mind because I live in a drought state, but even more because I've spent time in California the last while, mostly in hospitals. Those who are serious about conserving water have revived the old saying about flushing... "If it's yellow it's mellow. If it's brown flush it down." Showers are short, and water is saved from baths to water plants.
80% of the water use in California is to grow crops, and we all eat those crops. Let's pray for rain for California :)
