Walgreens Store Coupons vs. Manufacturer Coupons

There has been a little discussion on Chat about the Walgreens Infant Care coupons: Are they store coupons or manufacturer coupons? They are all store coupons despite the fine print that says "manufacturer coupon good only at Walgreens". Here's the evidence:

  • If you look at the numbers under the bar code, they all start with 00000. That is the place where a manufacturer normally puts its unique coding. There is no code. On the Infant Care coupons, the first 5 digits of the code are the same (00000) for both Pampers and  Huggies. No manufacturer would allow that. The only numbers that count are the last 5.
  • The bar code will only scan at Walgreens.
  • Walgreens store coupons deduct for every package in a single transaction, so only one coupon is needed, even if you are buying multiple packages. True manufacturer coupons never do that. If the checker keys in the four digit code, like 2844, the register knows what to take off and does it automatically. That will only work at Walgreens, and never with manufacturer coupons.
  • Finally, these coupons are thrown away by the checker (or someone in the office), since there is no address to send for reimbursement. True manufacturer coupons have fine print instructing stores where to mail them for reimbursement, or the store doesn't get paid.
That being said, you will still encounter clerks from time to time who will tell you you can't use the Infant Care coupons with a real manufacturer coupon. They are wrong. It's perfectly fine and the register will take both without beeping. But you may have limited success educating a cashier who is sure he/she is right. It would probably be easier to try again during a different shift or a different Walgreens.

One last point: Manufacturer coupons only exist on name brands, like Huggies, Pampers, etc. The Walgreens 'W' brands are all store brands. There is no such thing as a manufacturer coupon
on W diapers.
