Question of the Week, Your Response Appreciated

We have a new Question of the Week. It's interesting to watch the transformation when a person clicks with coupons. Often times, the frugal mentality spills over to areas besides the grocery store. Saving becomes a game and a way of life. With that in mind, please share your thoughts:

Give a vacation money-saving tip. How have you saved on transportation, tickets, food, lodging, souvenirs? If you have had a true frugal vacation, share the story.

If you have a digital picture you could share to go with your response, please email it to me.
easter@refundcents.com All responses are encouraged, big and small. Question of the Week
The responses will be posted in the print magazine, and on a new link here on www.refundcents.com

I'm sure this isn't the best story around, but I was pretty happy about my results...on my flight home from CA flying with United, they overbooked themselves as usual. They offered a $400 voucher for someone to give up their seat on the 8:30 am flight for a seat on the 1:30 pm flight. I had no other plans for the day, so I decided to take it. They even gave me a $15 meal voucher! And I got on an earlier stand-by flight! Spent 4 extra hours at ORD, but I think it was well worth it! This now allows me to be able to attend a friends wedding in December that I may not have been able to go to before. For my standards, that's pretty good frugalness! :)

This is the last week for the rewards special on HP ink. Get 20% back on purchase, plus turn in ink cartridges at the same time you buy HP ink and get $6 rewards per cartridge. WOW!
It's a good idea to sign up at staples.com for email notices, because they send out great coupons. Last week they sent out a 15% off coupon (except for computers) which was really nice with the above ink deal

For me it was the other way around. I am already fairly frugal in that I don't use much detergent in the washer, I don't use the clothes dryer, I turn off and unplug things not in use, I buy used clothes, I repair when possible rather than buying new, I dehydrate and can and am learning to ferment to add to our stockpile, but despite many, many years of couponing, I never really jumped into the drugstore deals until now. I'm getting hundreds of dollars of free things but I'm also spending too much toward that end, and much of the stuff I get isn't really necessary to our stockpile. Who needs 20+ mens body washes with 20+ more coupons to get more? I really need to find my happy medium with this because I broke our bank this week and we're scrambling for things we do need because I spent so much getting great deals on what we don't. Still, I have lots of things stockpiled now that we do need, and that was my goal. I'm thrilled every time I see the shelves. I know that if something goes wrong in our lives or in the world, available money won't have to be spent on health and beauty aids or on cleaning supplies. I've got plenty.

For the past several years I have provided budget counseling promoting coupon use through a local social service agency on a volunteer basis. One of my young clients wanted to show me how well she felt she had progressed so we went shopping together at 3 different area Walgreens stores. She bought 50 gillette body washes using B1G1F and $4 off 2, which printed her off a $4.50 RR, she then got 5 of the pro glide razors gift sets, which printed out $5 RR, bought tampons used coupon and RR and gave her another RR. She used her RR's to buy pizza and school supplies for her kids and still had over $90 in RR's left. While shopping she shared with me she sees a mental health counselor as she has a shopping addiction and never has any money to pay all her bills (prior to her statement, I was unaware of this) She has no men in her life and stated she don't know what she is going to do with all the mens body wash. When our class met today she announced that when she saw her therapist today, her therapist gave her congrats on her great purchases and that could help feed her addiction as well as money to pay her bills. My client said she told her therapist "I don't think I need to see you anymore as long as I have coupons. I'm cured !!!
Lets hope for her sake we never run out of coupons (LOL)

I would love to see vacation money-saving tips. I love planning trips! I use tripadvisor, and priceline. I have a room in Denver at the Renaissance for an upcoming trip I booked on priceline for $58. I also booked my car rental early through Rental Car Momma --a Standard size SUV for 8 1/2 days with tax for $599.

I saved a bunch of money on gas on our road trip to Arizona. I redeemed points where ever i could for gas cards. My credit card and MyPoints got the most. We saved even more when we camped in my dad's driveway.
